About Power Points

History

Since 1986, Power Points have been used as an option for regions within the VHSL. There are exceptions where some regions use different ranking systems.

What they are based on

The Power Points awarded for a matchup are based on two factors: the classifications of the teams playing in the matchup and the number of wins each team has (and continues to accrue throughout the season).

Matchups against schools outside of the VHSL are evaluated, and the non-VHSL team is assigned a dummy "classification" based on factors like student enrollment, keeping the rating system uniform across VHSL/VHSL and VHSL/non-VHSL matchups.

Base Points

• Class 6: 26 points (win) / 14 points (loss)
• Class 5: 24 points (win) / 12 points (loss)
• Class 4: 22 points (win) / 10 points (loss)
• Class 3: 20 points (win) / 8 points (loss)
• Class 2: 18 points (win) / 6 points (loss)
• Class 1: 16 points (win) / 4 points (loss)

Opponent Win Bonus

• If you beat them: 2 points × their total wins
• If you lose to them: 1 point × their total wins

Notes

• *Bonus points award to higher classification teams playing lower classification teams
• *Record for out of state teams that play more than 10 games will be adjusted down to 10 games
