About Power Points

History

Since 1986, Power Points have been used as an option for regions within the VHSL. There are exceptions where some regions use different ranking systems.

What they are based on

The Power Points awarded for a matchup are based on two factors: the classifications of the teams playing in the matchup and the number of wins each team has (and continues to accrue throughout the season).

Matchups against schools outside of the VHSL are evaluated, and the non-VHSL team is assigned a dummy "classification" based on factors like student enrollment, keeping the rating system uniform across VHSL/VHSL and VHSL/non-VHSL matchups.

How Power Points Are Calculated

1. Game Result Points

Each game earns a team a starting point value based on the outcome and the opponent's classification.

2. Strength of Schedule Points

Additional points are earned based on the number of games each opponent wins during the season.

• Against an opponent you defeated: earn 2 points for each of that opponent's wins.
• Against an opponent you lost to: earn 1 point for each of that opponent's wins.

These points are updated as opponents accumulate wins throughout the season.

3. Additional Rules

• Classification adjustment: When a team faces an opponent in a lower classification, the VHSL's classification bonus rules may adjust the starting point value.
• Non-VHSL opponents: Eligible opponents outside the VHSL are assigned an equivalent classification for rating purposes.
• Out-of-state opponents: Special rules apply when calculating records for out-of-state teams that play more than 10 games.

4. Final Power Point Rating

A team's Power Point average is calculated by dividing its total earned points by the number of games counted toward its rating.
